Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and gratitude. However, studies show that food waste, excessive consumption, and environmental pollution often increase during this sacred month.
Green Ramadan 1446 H/2025 at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ Campus aims to promote a more sustainable and eco-friendly Ramadan in alignment with Islamic values of moderation (wasatiyyah) and stewardship (khalifah).
As part of this initiative, the Rahmatan Lil 'Alamin Campus Mosque at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ invites students, faculty, and staff to embrace an environmentally conscious Ramadan through the following guidelines:
1. Eat Responsibly & Reduce Food Waste
✅ Take only what you need during sahur and iftar to minimize food waste.
✅ Store and repurpose leftovers instead of throwing them away.
✅ Support local vendors offering eco-friendly iftar meals with sustainable packaging.
✅ Prioritize healthy and plant-based foods to reduce carbon footprints.
2. Minimize Plastic Waste & Use Eco-Friendly Items
✅ Bring a reusable shopping bag when buying groceries or iftar meals.
✅ Carry a reusable water bottle to reduce single-use plastic waste.
✅ Use reusable cutlery and straws instead of disposable plastic ones.
✅ Opt for sustainable packaging when purchasing food and drinks.
3. Conserve Water & Energy
✅ Use water sparingly during wudu (ablution) and daily activities.
✅ Turn off lights, fans, and electronic devices when not in use.
✅ Walk, cycle, or use public transport to reduce carbon emissions.
4. Support Local & Sustainable Products
✅ Choose locally sourced food to reduce transportation-related carbon emissions.
✅ Support farmers and businesses practicing sustainable agriculture.
✅ Reduce red meat consumption to lessen environmental impact.
5. Implement the 3R Principles: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
✅ Reduce: Avoid unnecessary waste and limit single-use items.
✅ Reuse: Choose durable and reusable products whenever possible.
✅ Recycle: Separate waste properly and dispose of it responsibly.
6. Engage in Environmental & Community Initiatives
✅ Participate in clean-up drives before and after communal iftar gatherings.
✅ Contribute to green charity programs, such as tree-planting or sustainable waqf projects.
✅ Educate friends, family, and the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ community about the importance of an eco-friendly Ramadan.
