In a world where universities are often seen as secluded ivory towers, the Indonesian International Islamic University (ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ) breaks the mold. On Friday, June 28, 2024, the Association of Social Science Students (ASSIST) at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ held the inaugural Social Lens event, titled "Navigating Diplomatic Roadblocks: Palestine's Struggle for Peace," bringing together scholars, diplomats, and students to discuss peaceful solutions for the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The event, held at Theater A of ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ, saw an impressive lineup of speakers, including Dr. Zuhr Al-Suhr, the Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia; Dr. Rijal Al-Huda, Deputy Director of Middle East Affairs III, Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and K.H. Ulil Abshar Abdalla from Nahdlatul Ulama. The discussion was moderated by Moch. Faisal Karim, Ph.D., a lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS).

In his opening remarks, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ Rector Prof. Dr. Jamhari emphasized the university's commitment to solidarity through dialogue and assistance. "What we can do now is standing up for solidarity through discussion and assistance," he said. Philips Vermonte, PhD, the Dean of FOSS highlighted the importance of such discussions in shaping informed decisions for peaceful resolutions in Palestine.

Salsabila Syadza, Chairperson of ASSIST, noted the event's timing, which coincided with the Nakba commemoration, underlining the historical significance of the Palestinian struggle.

Dr. Zuhr Al-Suhr's heartfelt gratitude towards Indonesia for its unwavering support resonated deeply with the audience. His declaration of Palestine as the "Holy Land for Peace" served as a poignant reminder of the region's historical coexistence of Muslims, Christians, and Jews. However, he lamented the disruption caused by imperialistic ambitions, particularly by Israel, and the failure of the two-state solution proposed in 2002.

Dr. Rijal Al-Huda provided a stark update on the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with thousands of casualties and widespread displacement exacerbated by Israel's blockade. His words underscored the urgent need for academic and diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.

The event concluded with K.H. Ulil Abshar Abdalla's earnest plea for solidarity and support for Palestine, echoing the sentiments of many Indonesians. The enthusiastic participation of students from various faculties highlighted the university's role in fostering a globally conscious and proactive academic community. As ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ continues to uphold its mission of rahmatan lil 'aalamiin, the call for a free Palestine remains a unifying and urgent cause.
