As the world commemorates International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development on Dec. 5, the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ (ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ) stands as a beacon of volunteerism and community engagement, driven by its vibrant student associations and the shared goal of global development.
The theme for 2023, "If everyone did...", resonates profoundly with ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's community, encouraging collective action and collaboration. The Association of Social Science Students (ASSIST) at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ exemplifies this ethos. On May 11, 2022, ASSIST hosted the Asian African Youth Government, fostering dialogue on multiculturalism and peace—a crucial volunteer effort that aligns with the university's vision.
"We, as youngsters, really need to collaborate and move together to take care of our international community and peaceful world," stated Aldi Nur Fadil Auliya, the alumnus and former ASSIST President, reflecting on the significance of such events.
Another shining example of ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's commitment to volunteerism is the English Teaching Initiative by the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), which illustrates how ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ students extend their service beyond the university walls. In October 2023, FEB students engaged in a community service project by teaching English to the students of primary school—SD Islam Al Mujahidin Salak Tiga—demonstrating the university's dedication to educational outreach and societal development.
Meanwhile, ESTUDIA, the student association of ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s Faculty of Education (FoE) also launched an enriching program titled "Enrich Wise Words Around the School", an initiative focusing on strengthening Pancasila students' profiles through English language enrichment. The event, held at Pesantren Cendekia Amanah every semester, not only hones the students' linguistic skills but also imbues them with the confidence to participate in global dialogues.
Moreover, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's student body regularly organizes scholarship seminars, such as the one on May 28, 2022, providing prospective students with crucial guidance on writing statements of purpose for admissions—a critical step in accessing higher education. These seminars, which often feature ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ scholarship awardees from diverse backgrounds, including international students, are a testament to the university's inclusive and supportive academic culture.
ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's International Student Association (ISA) adds another layer to the university's volunteer efforts. Through initiatives like the airport pickup service for international students, ISA promotes a welcoming atmosphere that celebrates diversity and integration—an effort perfectly aligned with the ethos of International Volunteer Day.
These student-led initiatives at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ channel the very essence of International Volunteer Day. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres puts it, "Let's stand with volunteers, everywhere." ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's volunteers stand not only with their local community but also with the global populace, fostering a better future for all.
As we celebrate this significant day, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ and around the globe, whose relentless efforts contribute to a more inclusive, educated, and harmonious world. "Imagine what we could achieve if all joined in. And volunteered," said Toily Kurbanov, Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers. Indeed, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's students are not just imagining—they are doing.
Happy International Volunteer Day to the entire ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ community and all the volunteers around the world. Your actions inspire and motivate a world of potential volunteers to take the leap into service.
